How do children think and learn?

Thank you for your interest in our research! The Leonard Learning Lab is currenting running a study with families with children aged 4-5. This study takes place over 2 sessions:

  • The first visit is a 45-minute, in-lab appointment with our researchers at 100 College Street in New Haven, CT. Families will receive $30 ($10 for travel, $20 for participation)!

  • The second visit is a 30-minute Zoom appointment to take place 6 months to 1 year after your first visit! Families will receive $20 for participating in this second session.

How it works:

  1. Sign up for an appointment to participate in the first part of our study at 100 College St. (linked at the end of our screener form below).

  2. On the day of your appointment, arrive at the Security Desk in the main lobby 10 minutes before your appointment. One of our researchers will be there to greet you and escort you to the 12th floor. They’ll be wearing a rainbow lab coat!

Note: We will be applying non-invasive physiological sensors, so we ask that you and your child please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

  3. Your child will participate in 1-2 fun studies, which should take about 45 minutes.

  4. Your child will receive a prize, and you will receive $30 ($10 for travel, $20 for participation)!

  5. 6 months to 1 year after your initial visit, researchers from our lab will reach out with information regarding the Zoom appointment. Upon completion of your Zoom appointment, you will receive $20.

*Please note: In order to participate, a parent or legal guardian must complete a consent form and be willing to participate in the study. A parent or legal guardian must remain with the child at all times. Each parent or legal guardian may participate only once.

Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • Our lab runs developmental psychology studies about motivation and learning. In this study, we are examining changes in young children’s heart rate when they do various activities. In this activity, your child will wear sensors to measure heart rate and watch a video of animals and try out some puzzles! We find that children feel most comfortable when parents wear sensors too. Then, at the end of the study, both you and your child will get to learn new things about your heart! Your child may also participate in a short study at the end that looks at kid’s preferences and beliefs. In total, the studies will take 45 minutes and are designed to be fun and kid-friendly.

The later, remote study will include some simple survey questions and short activities, and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

  • For the first visit, your child will receive a small prize, and you will receive $30 ($10 for travel, $20 for participation).

Upon completion of the second, Zoom visit, you will receive $20.

  • The first part of this study is conducted at 100 College St., New Haven, CT 06511. Directions for parking will be sent in Calendly communications.

The second part of this study is conducted remotely, via Zoom.

  • We are running our studies from December 2024 to January 2025 on select dates; see the calendar linked on our screening form or preview our calendar above.

ABOUT ELIGIBILITY:

  • Unfortunately, we can only run research studies with children in the specified age range (4-5).

  • While your 4-5-year-old child is participating in the studies, your younger or older children are welcome to remain in the waiting room and do other activities we have available (building blocks, coloring).

  • Please note: Each parent or legal guardian may participate only once. If you have multiple children in the age range, kindly consider having a different parent or legal guardian accompany each child, if possible.

You can sign up for an in-lab testing slot for each child (the slots can be on the same day or on different days), as long as each child has a different parent or legal guardian accompanying them. You will receive $30 for each child who participates.

Similarly, you can sign up for a remote Zoom appointment for each child (on the same day or different days) and will receive $20 for each child.

  • Each child and parent or legal guardian can participate only once.

ABOUT PARTICIPATION:

  • The lab is located at 100 College St., New Haven, CT. Parking directions are linked here.

  • If you have to cancel or are running late to your appointment, please contact the researcher in charge of your study - their information will be provided to you after you sign up.

You will receive text reminders via Calendly 24 hours and 1 hour before your appointment. You can reply to those texts if you need to cancel or reschedule for another date.

  • Your child’s experience is our top priority: we want to make sure they enjoy participating in our research! When you arrive, we will spend some time building rapport with your child and allowing them to acclimate to the testing space. Then, we get verbal assent from your child before starting each study.

If after providing consent your child doesn’t want to participate or stops participating in the middle of a study, we will immediately stop the study and thank your child for trying it out. You and your child will still receive a prize and compensation.
